The new generation of solid-state cold light source LEDs was introduced in the 1960s. Until the 1980s, due to the low brightness of LEDs at that time, they were only used as indicator lights, and no one would have thought that they could be used as car lights. After entering the 1980s, LED brightness had a significant improvement and was used on a passenger car in 1985. In 1986, Nissan Company used 72 units on the 300ZX model car φ The 5mm LED serves as the central high mounted brake light, marking the beginning of LED application in the automotive field.
Compared with traditional car light sources, the advantages of LED are as follows:
(1) Long lifespan, maintenance free, and may not require replacement of lighting fixtures throughout the entire lifespan of the car.
(2) Very energy-efficient, at least half of the energy savings compared to incandescent lamps of the same brightness. Table 1 shows the comparison of energy consumption between car signal lights and incandescent lamps.
According to the 2003 US Energy Agency (DOE) Energy Efficiency Evaluation Report on Automotive LEDs, the results were surprising. For small cars alone, if LED headlights are used nationwide in the United States, it can save 1.4 billion gallons of fuel annually (1 gallon in the US=3.785 liters), and trucks can save twice as much fuel as small cars.
(3) No need for hot start time, fast light response speed. The starting time of ordinary self igniting lamp bulbs is generally 100-300ms, while LED bulbs are usually less than 70ms. For important brake lights, such a time difference means a 4-7m difference in braking distance during high-speed driving, thereby reducing the incidence of rear end accidents by 5%.
(4) Simple structure, strong disturbance and impact resistance.
(5) Small size, flexible design, and the ability to freely change lighting modes, suitable for various shapes of cars.
(6) The cold light characteristic of LED ensures that the lamp will not deform due to long-term heating, thereby improving the lifespan of the entire lamp set.
(7) The impact of voltage changes is much smaller than that of ordinary light bulbs, and it is easy to control.
Table 2 presents a comparison between LED high mounted brake lights and self incandescent high mounted brake lights.
LED, with its excellent safety, reliability, environmental friendliness, and energy efficiency, has become a new favorite of automotive lighting systems, bringing wedge machines to the upgrading and revolution of car lights.
